Why do some islamist have problems with western education?

The labels "Islamist" and "Muslim" represent two very different ideology. Islamists are a minority who believes in the extremist approach to Quranic teachings, teachings that are manipulated by various false evangelist who only seek to fulfil their personal vendettas. On the other hand, muslims are taught to live in harmony and peace with other cultures and religions. And the teachings also so say to learn, learn and earn knowledge of any sort whatever that knowledge maybe. If you research you will find that every discipline of education in the world from philosophy to applied sciences have atleast a couple of muslim pioneers. Examples are- Al beruni, Zabir ibn haiyan, Al kharizmi, Ibn Sina and many more, Some are even looked at as fathers of some disciplines.

But if you ask, why then the current islamists manifestos against western educations are very different? You obviously heard about ISIS. They are the most recent example of islamist extremism. Their only goal is to create a regime forcefully under sharia law that has been manipulated to the very core. Again you can ask why is it different. Well, they have raised a war in the name of islam that is in no way supported by the religion. They kill civilians and journalists in the name of a holy war that is not holy at all. This modus operandi is same for all the other fundamentalist believers such as Boko Haram, Al Qaeda or Hamas. They have problems and issues that are nothing more than tragedy and they fall prey to the nearby states policies. But they instead of attempting to cope decide to blame the west for their miseries wheres those issues were created by themselves in the beginning. These are the sign of cowardice insecurity and a tendency of blaming others for their miseries violently.

As the above described situation may seem very far from the question you asked but in reality they are connected from the root. As the real world evolvs the larger portion of muslim population is trying to adapt with it. But the other portion not more than 1% of the muslim population in the world or even less, who are because of their shortcomings in knowledge about how the other parts of world operates, they fear the change of that sorts making them lose the reducing authority they have. As history teaches us in thse kind of instances opressors and false evangelists always try manipulating a certain population into believing some false propaganda. Only to maintain their authority and fooling themselves in the process.

And one of those misleading preaching is that western education or culture in general is contradictory to their religious beliefs. But in truth, there is nothing about avoiding any type of education in quran. But what they do is use this Hadith-

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “He who calls others to follow the Right Guidance will have a reward equal to the reward of those who follow him, without their reward being diminished in any respect on that account.”

[Muslim].

And manipulate whatever their vendetta is by making others believe that their "right guidance" will take the followars to Jannah. Where any new emphasis or twisting the words of hadith is strictly forbidden . This makes the false teachers fallen from islam and they become every thing they say they are against.

You can trust me when i say this, that no common muslims are against anything other cultures,religion or education such as christianity, buddhism or western education. We all have black sheeps in our family. Muslims do too.
