Nickelodeon Musings - A Cynical Parent's Point Of View - The Loud House

in #review7 years ago

The Loud House is an animated show on Nickelodeon that stars Lincoln and his marvelous misadventures with his rather large family.  The Loud House was based off of animator and comic illustrator Chris Savinos life, where he grew up in Michigan with a family of equal or lesser members.

Story: C-

Animation: B+

Overall: C

The Loud House takes the mentality of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes and completely misses the point of childhood.  While the subject matter of today's world (Clyde's parents both male, Lincolns sister being bisexual) is a much needed breath of fresh air into an otherwise masculine environment, the point is consistently missed with each episode.  Let's have a break down of a standard episode:

  1. Lincoln talks to 4th wall
  2. Lincoln will enjoy day
  3. Something goes wrong
    1. If problem is with sister move to step 4
    2. If problem involves school move to step 5
  4. Sister ruins day
    1. Lincoln takes revenge
    2. Lincoln learns lesson
    3. Lincoln loves family
  5. School somehow interfered with plans
    1. Lincoln plans for the worst
    2. Lincoln learns lesson
    3. Lincoln loves school

This method, while tried and true, is an obsolete form of delivery for today's cartoons.

The magic of The Loud House relies on the different personalities of all the members of the house hold.  You have the smart one, the popular one, Dopey, Sneezy, etc that all link their powers together to form what is essentially a mediocre show.  Each sister brings to the table one common type of persona that always interferes with Lincoln, who is an amalgam of all the characters.  While some of the sisters stick to the stereotype of females in todays society, the majority of them have personalities that shine new light (my favorite is Lana, who knows the sewer plans of the entire town and is a whizz with the wrench), they all somehow always miss the target of what the creator was going for.

Overall the show is much better than other Nickelodeon shows (Henry Danger to name one).  If more time was spent actually allowing the sisters to become more than their personality though and give some of the light to someone else besides Lincoln, I'm sure the rating would change.
