If you ask what is Monster Hunter Generations, then I will answer it as a "semi-sequel" from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. There are indeed some changes in the gameplay, but it is more aimed at the new "hunters" who want to play Monster Hunter series for the first time. For you veteran hunters who have been playing Monster Hunter series for a long time, Generations is a place for nostalgia. Why? Read on to review below to find out.

Don't fix it, if didn't damage

Monster Hunter Generations still has gameplay like various previous iterations. You act as a new hunter who is given various tasks, such as collecting natural resources, hunting and catching monsters, or simply walking around the site until the deadline is set.
The reason why the Monster Hunter gameplay is still effective today is the challenge and the feeling of satisfaction. The process that needs to be pursued to hunt monsters to conquer them feels both exciting and thrilling. Moreover, you can engrave your hunt to make more powerful weapons and armor.
My words above can only describe a little experience playing in Monster Hunter. Just by feeling it yourself in both your hands then you can understand why Monster Hunter game fans willingly staring at the 3DS screen for hours.

Hunting with style

Generations introduced new gameplay elements called Hunting Style and Hunting Art. Hunting Style determines your style of play during hunting monsters, while Hunting Art is a movement or special moves that before use must be filled in the meter first.
There are four types of Hunting Style in Monster Hunter Generations, among others:

  • Guild item Style - a common style that has existed since the first Monster Hunter. Suitable for those who do not like the gameplay changes from the original series.

  • Style Striker - more to the use of Hunting Art, considering you can use three Hunting Art at once with this style.

  • Aerial Style - perfect for those of you who like air strikes to be able to ride a monster to drop it. First present in Monster Hunter 4.

  • Adept Style - you have to wait until the last second for the monsters to attack you, then dodge or withstand the attack in order to launch a great counterattack.

The Hunting Art type is determined by the type of weapon you use, although some types can be used in all weapons. Not all Hunting Art movements contain attacks, some even contain healing abilities, avoidance movements, and more. Both Hunting Style and Hunting Art give new colors to the Monster Hunter gameplay. With these two things you can also determine the direction or how to play what you think best fits your taste. From my experience of playing for more than twenty hours, these two things can actually make the game more challenging. It takes a long time to get used to the Hunting Style of your choice, as well as the patience and exact calculations for using Hunting Art. In addition, some monsters are even more comfortable when hunted with certain Hunting Style and Hunting Art.

Provide weapons before hunting In addition to Hunting Style and Hunting Art, other changes are more complex customization systems, one of which is in the armament. If you have provided enough materials from monsters or natural resources to change the shape of the weapon and strengthen it, then in Generations you must raise your weapons level first. Another more complex customization system is Palico, a small cat that you can take as hunting buddies as well as the Monster Hunter serial mascot. Unlike the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate where each Palico already has the capability installed automatically, then in Generations you can define your own Palico's ability to be used in the field.,,,

The biggest change that is present in Generations besides the above is the ability to control Palico itself. Palico does not need store-bought equipment to collect natural resources. Therefore, every time I play Palico, I can collect natural resources with ease without fear of running out of equipment.
Palico uses their own unique abilities as an attack and healer. So before you control your Palico, choose a mission that suits the level and set their ability first.,,,

The most beautiful memories with Monster Hunter
Cheer up you guys veteran hunters, the article Capcom gives a lot of content from various previous Monster Hunter games that you can find in Generations. One is the classic hunting area of previous Monster Hunter titles, such as Verdant Hills from the first Monster Hunter (PS2), to Arctic Ridge in Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP).
Visiting the two areas again with more beautiful graphics, plus the melodious music, made me almost shed tears. I also have to thrust Capcom for bringing classic monsters that were previously eliminated in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate as well as adding new cool monsters and no less dangerous.,,,

# Imperfect

Unfortunately, this sweet nostalgia is sometimes disturbed by repetitive early missions, especially species missions collecting natural resources. Although Monster Hunter games have previously had similar missions, they have the right portion and are less repetitive like Monster Hunter Generations.
The main story of Generations is also nothing special. Although previous Monster Hunter also has a simple story, but still more impressive than the story that is in Generations.
The biggest drawback of Monster Hunter Generations is the return of inhospitable play directions. Whether veteran or new players will be "forced" to read play directions with small font sizes like a pocket novel. This not only makes it difficult for new players who want to learn to play Monster Hunter, but also veteran players who want to direct action.
Monster Hunter Generations also provides online multiplayer features. Unfortunately Capcom does not deliver better communication skills in the chat system for the players. It's not a big deal, though I admit sometimes to ask simple things to a teammate is a little inconvenient.,,,

Conclusion

Monster Hunter Generations is a "semi-sequel" worthy of veteran Monster Hunter fans thanks to a variety of nostalgic content that can make loyal fans touched. For new players, this game is a start with some changes as an offering.
Although Monster Hunter Generations has some disadvantages, such as repetitive early missions, uninteresting stories, and tutorials that are nightmares for players, but the single-player and multiplayer experience offered is enough to keep you from moving in your seat play for hours.
