The Great War came, Bringing winter with it. The living against the Dead who will win? - Game Of Thrones 8x03 Review

in #review6 years ago

Game of thrones has everyone hypnotized. And if you are not part of the great majority that we see the series, do not get mad. Welcome again to a new review. Remember that if you have not seen the chapter, it would be better to stop reading. This post contains SPOILERS... Gif source

Chapter 3 of the 8th season of Game Of Thrones arrived, the great war finally happened. The living confronted the dead at Winterfell. We did not know which side would win, we did not know who was going to die or who would become a white walker. They were the most agonizing minutes of a television program, with a duration of 1 hour with 21 minutes and 16 seconds. Explore with me the highlights of this great episode that ended up becoming a movie, at least for this episode.

The long and darkest Night

I have to be aware and it's not because of discrediting the show, but the episode used a film resource that is always used to make the budget work in other aspects. The dark scenes was the topic of conversation of the fans after watching the episode. The opinions found were: "the 20 extra minutes of the chapter were of darkness" "Thanks to the dragons for giving us light to see the episode". But here is what I think happened.

Events are supposed to occur in a place where there is no technology. Therefore a battle at night and in such conditions, would imply that everything was going to be dark, and so it was shaped, total darkness accompanied by a soundtrack that caused cardiac arrhythmia because it was according to events. So instead of being something visual, it becomes something subjective, that is to say: that the spectator creates what he wants to believe. The horror embodied in the dark shots corresponds to that that was what the warriors of the living were facing; see nothing. The power in these scenes is in what you do not see. The only illuminated shots of the battle took place thanks to The Dragons and Melisandre, but we'll talk about that later.

The Lord of Light, really gave us light.

Thanks to the witch Milissandre we had few seconds of illumination in the battlefield. The first rank of the army of the living, conformed by the Dothrakis, received a very special help from the Lord of Light, who through the witch helped the living, lighting all the curved swords of these ruthless warriors.

The battle started a few seconds after everyone had their swords on. At the top of a mountain Jon and Dany observed everything. The strategists were on the walls of Winterfell watching everything. While the leaders of the armies were in their positions. The Dotrhakis were the first to attack. To which I must admit that it was one of my favorite scenes. We saw how everyone was going with their horses at full speed, it was also exciting to see a ghost run, as if it were being possessed.

All this to be summarized to nothing. Literally nothing remained of what that first attack was. We heard the cries of terror and the swords cutting the flesh of the dead and the living. The more the episode progresses, the more fire the swords became extinct. It did not take long for everything to go dark again.

The battle in the skys.

As expected Dany and Jon were part of the war, both dragon riders started the flight when they saw all the swords in the front line extinguished. Throwing flares right and left. A visual spectacle to see how the fire consumed the enemies. If we consider the darkness, the effect that they intended they achieved, leaving us in the dark and giving us flashes of light was necessary for all of us to feel the danger in the flesh.

But what nobody expected was that the king of the night would produce a great blizzard. We all know that Dany dragons do not like the cold, so they were at a disadvantage against the strategies of the army of the dead. The battle in the skies did not escape the long night, since in the scenes it was very little noticed who was the "good" and the "bad" dragon. However this would improve later. As I mentioned it beyond giving the sensation to the spectator of darkness, it was to make the most of the budget of the episode, which by the way I did not mention was 15 million dollars.

I swore to fight for the North...

Many were sworn allegiance to the King of the North...

All of them were in Winterfell at the time of the great war.

It was assumed that this episode would have the worst massacre of characters, or at least we all believed. Game of thrones always surprised by killing characters when you least expect it. And hey come on! That if the war was against white walkers, it was assumed that many were going to die. The pools did not coincide. Not so much because nobody agreed with someone else. If not because really no relevant person died in the previous episode. Do not misunderstand my words, you'll see why.

Yes, it's time to talk about the deaths of the characters. Death that were not relevant to me, because they were more than obvious that they were going to end in this episode. So the surprise was not so great. but if they knew how to manage the resource and make us connect with each death.

Sam's Night Watch's friend, Eddison Tollett, was never destined to survive the long night; nor Beric Dondarrion and his sword of fire.

The death of Jorah Mormont, who falls defending Daenerys, is a noble ending for a character with very little to do in the future. It was at this point that we understood the true love that Jorah felt for Dany ... This scene apart from exciting was loaded with many feelings.

The same happens with Theon Greyjoy, who finally gets his moment as a redeeming hero, dying protecting the boy he once betrayed.

But, it is the death of the little Lyanna Mormont, who dies crushed in the hands of a giant, but not before she manages to stab him in the eye. For me one of the most difficult to digest deaths, because it was really violent. to see how the blood gushed from the little girl's mouth while the giant pressed it with one hand was frightful. We will always remember the courage of this character. A sign of female empowerment.

Final moments.

After such a spectacle of deaths. Few were the hopes of those who remained standing. Dany tried to incinerate the king of the night with the Dracarys and he would still be alive, it only made me think one thing; Perhaps the king of the night was a Targaryen? That would be the only explanation of how he did not die cremated. It was that macabre smile at the end that made me lose any hope

Then the battle was coming to its resolution, The living were losing. Dany had lost another Dragon, Jon chased the king of the night to put an end to everything. When what many were fearing happened, the king of the night simply raised his hands and the dead began to revive again.

What do we say to the God of death? Not today.

The king of the night does not hesitate to go after his target, Bran Stark. I had everything dominated, I just needed to eliminate the last enemy and thus perpetrate the eternal night. But nobody had a small detail. Melisandre had been reunited with Arya Stark, who reminded her of the prophecy that I once mentioned to her.

It was then that after a musical background full of sadness, all the living began to fall apart, even Jon was determined to die standing in front of the Dragon that contracted the King of the night. In the part where Bran was, everything was about to end. The generals of the army of death were guarding their king when a slight breeze blew and out of nowhere Arya Stark jumped towards the king of the night to end everything, when he manages to hold her by the neck. At that moment we thought that it would be the end of Arya, but in a sly movement, she manages to release the tip of the Valyrian steel to hold it with the other hand and nail it to the body of the king of the night. Putting an end to the Great War.

I apologize because I know that the post is long. But understand that the chapter lasted 1 hour 21 minutes.

Thanks for taking the time to read. Good to know that you like the series. This Sunday for sure the episode will clear up a few things

I have not watched the series, not even one episode. Sometimes I feel like I am not socially acceptable because of it :(:(

don't worry. There's Many tv shows that I do not see. we all have different tastes.

Good summary. I have tried to avoid the downpour of posts and discussions on the series. People can go really crazy about theories, speculations and criticism on whether or not a certain outcome was good or not.
I think that from the very beginning the author of the story showed us that the story, despite its fantastic framework, is very realistic in as much as it shows us how cruel life can be and how the characters we like so much and who we consider more worthy of admiration can die just as easily as any of us. Evil sometimes prevail (in some form or another and characters are not purely good or purely evil).
I try not to fuss too much about the development of the series. I would not be schock at any outcome the writers end up giving us.
It has been so far a wild ride. One of the best, if not the best production in movie making history, better than the Lord of the Rings (my humble opinion).

how much reason in your words, my friend.
It is up to each person to see the show in their own way. I usually, when I am anxious to know the future of events, I search the internet for theories and possible resolutions. but that does not help me at all, it makes me more intense and more eager to know how this series is going to end. which undoubtedly has everyone giving something to talk about.

The last episode was pretty excited but honestly, it was so dark that sometimes I really have to focus on what's going on and who is fighting.
On the other hand its a pity that nobody actually have a proper fight with the Night King, Danarys try to burn him, Jon when he try to kill him was attacked by all deaths and Arya, yes she is a total badass but still.... We deserve a proper fight.

I'm glad that my favorite characters are still alive.

Maybe a melee is something that the king of the night was avoiding. Maybe melee is something that the king of the night was avoiding. From the first time he always were in his dragon. and if you ask me, this is not all about the Night king. Maybe melee is something that the king of the night was avoiding. From the first time he always were in his dragon. and if you ask me, this is not all about the Night king. Remember the Craster son.

Yes, I know this story is about the Seven Kingdoms and who will rule them:)

This is the best review I've seen so far on the blockchain. I've seen many but none were so nicely detailed.
I've been watching the show and waiting for this episode as we all knew many things is going to happen. I agree with you, Lyanna Mormont's death was a very tragic and regrettable. I like her character and although I have predicted her death, I feel sorry for her. As I wrote in my short review, she was a very little piece on a very big board.
I liked Arya very much and was glad she got so much screen time and a very important role in this episode.
I'm looking forward to the next one as it's going to be interesting.
Congratulations on the nice review.

all the theories agree that Arya will become the heiress of the iron throne. I still hear Lady Mormont's bones crunch in the giant's hands... Fortunately, today we have another episode of GOT. the wait is over, we will finally know what comes after the great war.

I Believe Arya is the most suitable one, as she has the skills and she is more down to earth. Her sister is not on the other hand. I know the new episode is tonight or in the morning but it will be tomorrow night for me, so I have to stay away from the Game of Thrones posts to avoid spoilers :)

I am from Venezuela. here are 10.45am ... the episode premieres at 9pm local time. You have to avoid spoilers at all costs.

I'm from Romania and it's 5:49 pm here right now. I have no idea when is the new episode aired but I'm always watching it on Monday evening, which is fine for me. I can't stay up like others do, but I'm fine with Monday evening too :)

Avoid social networks. It is good that you see it on Mondays, while we are all bored Monday night, you are enjoying GOT.

Despite the very dark cinematography, this was one of the best episodes of the show!

Heyy @wisejg, thanks for the review!
The end of this episode was simply amazing! I really enjoyed this episode in its whole. I was expecting Arya to come though :) But still it was very exciting!

Yes, it was a very exciting ending. I admit that the soundtrack of the episode added a lot of emotion.

You're right. I liked the soundtrack in the end too.
