September 27: Coatesville Red Raiders at Rustin Golden Knights Football Game

in #rgkmb5 years ago (edited)

Summary: In Friday night's game, the Coatesville Red Raiders beat the Rustin Golden Knights by a score of 36-7, bringing Rustin's season-long record to 4-2 (3-1 in conference). The game had some exciting moments, but Pennsylvania's #8 ranked high school football team wound up overwhelming the Knights. This post contains a photo-essay from the stands.

As with the previous week, Rustin's band was joined in the stands by visiting students. This time it was 8th graders from the local middle school. In addition to joining in the "pep music" in the stands, the eighth graders also got to play September and The Hey Song on the track as part of the half-time show. Hopefully, this gives the kids something to look forward to when they come to high school next year.

The football game started off with a bit of a surprise when Rustin, ranked #110 in the state, marched down the field and scored a touchdown on their opening drive, with #8 carrying the ball across the goal line. Coatesville responded quickly, though and it was 7-7 with a few minutes left in the first quarter. Then, in a game-changing play, Rustin's #4 completed a pass to a receiver who had an open path to the goal line, but he was caught from behind by a Coatesville defenseman who snatched the ball out of his hand and returned it 90 or so yards for a Coatesville touchdown. After that sudden change in momentum, Rustin was scoreless for the rest of the game. Rustin was also afflicted by penalties and more turnovers, which you just can't afford when you're playing against the #8 ranked team in the state. The team put their hearts into it, but Coatesville won the day.

The remainder of this post contains a photo essay from the game. Most of the photos are probably from early in the evening, since I continue to have difficulty with the auto-focus lens after dark.

Unless otherwise noted, all images are original photos that were taken by @remlaps.

Coatesville - Pregame

It's ironic that since Rustin keeps playing half-time, which is after dark, my pictures of the visiting bands tend to look better. Here is Coatesville, during their pregame show.

Rustin - Half time

But despite the darkness at half time, I did manage to get some photos of Rustin's band, along with the visiting eighth graders.

As a reminder, Rustin's show was called, "Descent into madness," and it featured Green Day's Basket Case, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

Football

Rustin's #8 managed one touchdown and a number of strong carries. #21 showed up with some good carries of his own, too. I also heard #1 and #42 called for carrying the ball a few times. On defense, #1 made a number of tackles.

Unfortunately, the early darkness is making it difficult or impossible for me to get action shots without blurring.

Thank you to the band parents who volunteered to keep the stadium-crowd fed!

Since I'm doing this on Sunday, it looks like the ranks have already been updated with results from this week-end. At a national level, after the loss to Coatesville, Rustin fell from 3,519 to 3,754. Their state rank fell from 110 to 116. And their Class AAAAA rank held at 28.

Next week's game will be another non-conference game against Chichester.

The game will take place at Chichester High School in southern Delaware County, near where the state borders with both New Jersey and Delaware. The team is ranked #241 in the state with a 2-3 record.
