Road to SteemFest3: The Physical Road

Buses, trains, planes and taxis.

I think that is going to be the modes of transport to Steemfest. The city I live in has an airport but the flights would have taken me via Helsinki first for some crazy additional price and I would have needed a taxi to the airport anyway as the flight was so early.

4am is a good time to wakeup isn't it? Geez, that is normally when I am heading to bed. I have no idea how I am going to manage it but I will have to catch a bus (I think they are running at that time) to the city to hop on a train to Helsinki, and then a connecting train to the airport. I expect it is going to take me about 3 hours to get to the airport but it saved me about 200 euros on the additional 30 minute flight. Ripoff much?

So anyway, my flight is at 9 am from Helsinki airport which means I have to be there 1.5 - 2 hours early. This isn't necessary for everyone but I don't think I have ever made it through security without being swabbed for explosives. No cavity searches yet however - Fingers crossed.

It isn't a direct flight, it goes through Stockholm but I don't get off the plane. I don't know why but I dislike sitting in planes not moving on tarmacs. Well, I do kind of know why because once upon a time I was stuck on the tarmac for 5 hours at Heathrow Airport while on my way to Finland. Wasn't fun. I will arrive in Krakow just after midday and will consider waiting the 5 hours for @abh12345 to arrive so we can share a cab. It is highly unlikely.

Oh, why could we share a cab? The highly esteemed @anomadsoul has ordered an AirBnB somewhere near somewhere in, somewhere.... well, it is supposedly in Krakow. I should probably read some of the details about things but I am a terrible organizer when it comes to travelling and normally rely on my wife to do all of the worrying for me, as she loves to have all of the papers and everything in order. I am more of a 'wing it' traveller.

I don't even know who will be staying at the house and most likely, there will be some visitors flowing through the doors too since well, @anomadsoul... I think @abh12345 is going to need those earplugs because although I don't believe it, my wife dreams I snore. I am hoping that I can get some sleep though since I get so little at home I may as well take advantage of being away. I am sure my wife won't mind the silence.

I have so little currently planned other than getting there I am sure that I am missing something. I will likely run through it all the night before. ;)

Sort:

which day are you arriving at?
I am arriving with the 13:35 plane from Dusseldorf on the 7th
I have a transfer booked but do not really know if its private. if so, you are welcome to join me to go to the city

Lol, I didn't add the date. I am getting in the day before on the 6th as the only flights available on the 7th would have been too late in.

Instead of waiting for five hours for a cab ride, you can do a tour of the city in that time and still be back at the airport before your friend arrives!
Oh, and good luck with airport security... do they make you take your shoes off in your country? I love doing that at 5am... oh, and the belt, don't forget to take that off, too!

It looks like there is a decent train connection to the city so I might grab that and do a little walk around (with baggage) or grab a coffee. THen @abh12345 could do the same and we meet at the train station.

They make me do everything. I was once interrogated at the gate in Hong Kong by ASIO (Australian FBI) for 40 minutes to go into Australia...

A train sounds good - you may well be standing for comfort if the airport 'inspection' arrives :D

I am sure Asher will hold your hand and play wifey for a few days.

I am hoping for some spooning. Poland can get cold.

I think you lot will be too pissed to feel the cold knowing whose in your digs

What are you trying to say? :D :D

Just that I expect you guys to have a really good time.

Yeah, apparently there is a 4/5 day conference to go to as well :D

Day 3 onward may start feeling a bit rough then

It is going to be SoberFest3 for me :D

but I don't think I have ever made it through security without being swabbed for explosives.

Shit mate! with your current semblance of lack of sleep would they still think that you show a face with any desires of looking for your 72 virgins?

Perhaps my look of desperation for finding a place to sleep (my promised land) will be confused for something else :D

Sounds like an adventure! I love how you plan is really just to get there haha.. who cares about the details, just arrive and figure it out after. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you too.. nothing like a good cavity search to get your travels off on the right foot. Safe travels!

The logistics sound stressful and a bit complicated. I assume all will go well. It will be an opportunity to grow and be refreshed. Just make sure you don't leave anything behind. LOL That is no fun.

Leaving stuff behind is my M.O. unfortunately :D

It's always fun trying to work out the train system, esp. if you don't speak the local lingo. Looks like a 26 minute journey from the airport to the city.

Get on and cross fingers.

Wow friend I'm very happy that you can go on that trip, you know something at my 43 years. Never in my life have I mounted a plane. And since I've never done it, I would not mind being on a plane waiting.
Good Friend I wish you the best on that trip. I look forward to your publications of your experience.

No cavity searches yet however - Fingers crossed.

This is one you've left open for discussion for once :P

No worries about waiting 5 hours for me, you can get the groceries in and stick the kettle on :D

the discussion can wait. What I was thinking is perhaps catching the train into the city and working it out from there. supposedly the traffic can suck from the airport even though it is only 15 km. If the place isn't far I can drop off my bag and come back to meet you at the station.

And I'll be arriving around rush hour too, although there is a ring-road which should be ok, or not.

Either way, plenty of time to formulate a plan and then watch it change :D

Oof, that seems like an odyssey, hope you're travelling reasonably light XD It'll be awesome fun times though :D

The biggest challenge is going to be the finding some quiet moments to sleep :D
