Bandoleras vs Bombers

in #rollerderby5 years ago (edited)

This Saturday, Casa Grande's Roller Derby team, The Big House Bombers, traveled to Tucson to take on Tucson Roller Derby's own, Bandoleras.
Before the second bout of a double header, we laughed and chatted as we geared up in a small green locker room at the Tucson Indoor Sports Center. Donning our Orange "away jerseys" for the first time, we were excited and ready to play. Our goal tonight...to have fun.
It was a nice venue; private locker rooms, fair prices on snacks, and plenty of seating options for spectators.
As we took to the floor during a brief intermission, we took notes of the grip of the track. VERY GRIPPY. A slick track provides a nice slide when stopping, and a grippy track has you screeching to an abrupt hault. There are pros and cons to all track surfaces, and although our track at home is incredibly slick (and I love it) I also appreciate a grippy track, as we were born on a sandpaper surface affectionately called "The Slab".
When the first game came to a conclusion, some girls changed their wheels to better accommodate the floor, while many of us skated on the sidelines for a better feel. My wheels are a hybrid for indoor and outdoor use and I find they have been versatile enough for me.
Tucson took the win over Yuma in the first bout, and we filed into our places on the bench. It was our turn. I beamed at my teammates, as we shared encouragements.
When the whistle blew, we were ready. We communicated, and performed well. I scored some points, earned two penalties in the first half and a third penalty with a little over four minutes left of the bout. We held their Jammers and secured the win.
Most importantly, my team stayed focused on fun, we stayed calm and played well together. It was a good night.

SO IT'S ON A HOCKEY RING? I THOUGHT THEY DID THIS IN SKATE RINGS, WHICH ARE SLOWLY BEING PHASED OUT... HMMMM... SO COOL. MY THIGHS WOULD KILL ME AFTERWARDS <3

Every league has a different venue and track. Our league and Yuma's league skate on a concrete surface at our local fairgrounds (respectively), this was Tucson's venue and it's "sport court". Phoenix uses an indoor basketball court and Prescott uses an outdoor roller hockey rink. We don't actually have a skating rink here in Casa Grande. It's definitely good exercise and uses muscles one may not realize one has. LOL
