January 24, 1859: The Little Union - The Union of the Romanian Principalities under Alexandru Ioan Cuza
Today, Romania celebrated 159 years from the Little Union ... a very important achievement for this little and beautiful country.
a little introduction ...
On January 24, 1859, took place the Little Union - the Romanian Principalities Union under the leadership of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The Little Union of 1859 was the first important step on the way of the achievement of the Romanian unitary national state.
The unification of the two Principalities was a process that began in 1848, based on the strong cultural and economic closeness between the two countries. In 1848 a customs union was established between Moldova and Wallachia during the reigns of Mihail Sturdza and Gheorghe Bibescu respectively.
In Moldova, Alexandru Ioan Cuza was unanimously elected on January 5, 1859, the representative of the "National Party", and subsequently, in a secret meeting of the Assembly, the deputy Vasile Boerescu proposed on 24 January 1859 the election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, this being accepted unanimously.
The fact accomplished on 24 January 1859 was considered by the Ottoman Gate and by Austria as a violation of the Paris Convention, but the text of the 1858 Convention did not stipulate that the princes elected in the two principalities would be separate persons,
In 1862, with the help of the unionists of the two countries, Alexandru Ioan Cuza unified the Parliament and the Government, realizing the political union, and after its removal from power in 1866, the union was strengthened by bringing Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to the throne. By the Constitution adopted on July 1, 1866, the United Principalities are officially named Romania, because on 1 December 1918 the Great Union of Transylvania with Romania was established, creating the present state.
