Royal Wedding - “Persons”

Did anyone, who watched the royal wedding, notice something that the priest said when he asked about anyone having reason for these “persons” not to marry.
Instead of saying “man and woman” the word “persons” was inserted.

I found that very interesting and telling of the absence of gender.
