AMALANHIG

The meaning of Amalanhig is stiff one. They are a Filipino version of a zombie vampire and originated from Visaya and Waray. There are different versions on how they come to be. One is an aswang that died and was did not transfer their power to their successor. Another version is if a man or woman dies killed by someone and which prevents them to finish their goal in life. They come back from the dead as a rotting vampire. They kill by sucking blood and another version is they will tickle you until you die laughing and horrified.

Their body is stiff and their legs cannot bend but they are very fast. You will know they are near when you smell decaying meat. They live in the woods and they will chase travelers tirelessly. If you speak to them they will just mimic what you say and will run towards you. If you encounter one you need to climb up a tree, run in zig zag to lose them as they can only run in one direction. Another way is to jump into water as they cannot get wet. If they get submerged into water they will turn into maggots and you need to destroy them as soon as possible.

There is also a legend that a Spanish officer in the Philippines asked a shaman to make an army of undead. They killed a lot of people and covered them with black powder. A black stone was put in the mouth of the dead and the shaman performed a dark ritual. They rose from the grave on the third day as rotting vampires killing all of the enemies. When they are all dead they also died and turned into worms.
