RE: Potential Disaster from Space
I liked your article, I agree with most things but I would like to emphasize that the drawings or animations we always see of the space junk are taken out of proportions. The space junk is so small and sparsely distributed that engineers can calculate many trajectories which wouldn't intersect with any of the known tracked objects by distances of kilometers. Sure that it would be a problem in the future if we keep dumping everything in space but for now we are in no need to panic.
As for asteroid mitigation, you could write an article solely on that. :P There are newer studies that explore a lot of other possibilities.
Cheers!
I agree this will probably be fixed soon or later, as we discussed in the other post ;)
Old info is still valid, preventing better than cure. Prevent not to make too much waste in space, better and cheaper than cleaning it.
the latest I might miss it, (sorry) :)> Scientists from NASA and the National Security Administration of Nuclear have devised a plan for the Mitigation Mission of Hypervelocity Asteroids for Emergency Response (HAMMER).
The HAMMER spacecraft, which weighs 8.8 tons, can be used to direct itself to a small asteroid or to remove space rocks using a nuclear device.
thanks for the correction :)
