Cassini Mission Grand Finale Event

I saw some news on Cassini Mission so thought to share. I am not sure how many of you aware of this mission and its contribution so I thought to share some facts about it. This is one of the successful mission has been carried out. After two decades in space, NASA's Cassini spacecraft is nearing the end of its remarkable journey of exploration on Sep 15, 2017.

Mission Overview

Launched: Oct 15, 1997, The Cassini mission to Saturn is one of the most ambitious efforts in planetary space exploration ever mounted. A joint endeavor of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian space agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana *(ASI).

This is also called as Cassini-Huygens, which is named for the Italian-French astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini, discoverer of Saturn's ring divisions and four of its satellites and the ESA-developed Huygens probe, named for the Dutch astronomer, mathematician and physicist Christiaan Huygens, discoverer of Titan.

Cassini is a sophisticated robotic spacecraft orbiting the ringed planet and studying the Saturnian system in detail. Cassini also carried a probe called Huygens, which parachuted to the surface of Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, in January 2005 and returned spectacular results.

Cassini orbits Saturn, studying the ringed planet and its moons in detail. The Huygens probe landed on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, in January 2005.

The mission entered orbit around Saturn on June 30, 2004 (PDT), carrying the European Huygens probe. After its four-year prime mission, Cassini's tour was extended twice. Its key discoveries have included the global ocean with indications of hydrothermal activity within Enceladus, and liquid methane seas on Titan.

What will happen on Sep15, 2017

The spacecraft will make its final approach to the giant planet Saturn. But this encounter will be like no other. This time, Cassini will dive into the planet's atmosphere, sending science data for as long as its small thrusters can keep the spacecraft's antenna pointed at Earth. Soon after, Cassini will burn up and disintegrate like a meteor.
