Science and Hinduism

Hinduism is about 3500 years old religion and more specifically a culture.

In ancient times also, Hindu rishis had knowledge of human body, medicines, and even all aspects of science which may not be known to us in these days even with the vast technological development.
They had created some rituals and rules to be followed in our routine life which were believed to be connected to religion but have more of scientific base.
Here are some of them-

  • namaste

Joining both palms to greet someone is called 'namaste'.
Joining both palms ensures activation of pressure points of eyes, ears and mind present at the tips of all fingers which helps remember the person for long time.
It has another benefit that we don't do any physical contact with the person so there is no any transfer of germs due to contact.

  • Offering water to the sun

In Hinduism, we have a tradition to offer water to the sun early in the morning which means we allow sun rays to fall on our body which keeps us away from diseases mainly related to eyes and skin.

  • Suryanamaskar

It is believed to be the god of all exercises.
It has two benefits.
First, we wake up early in the morning so that we can get more time to do our routine work and reach our goals.
Moreover suryanamaskar is very good for our health and flexibility of the body.

  • Tilak on forehead

On the forehead, between two eyebrows, there is a spot which is a major nerve point and which is pressed during application of kumkum tilak.
This kumkum prevents the loss of energy and improves concentration.
Male applies sandlewood tilak which gives slow fragrance for the whole day.

  • Married women apply sindoor in the Vermillion

Sindoor is composed of turmeric-lime and metal Mercury.
Mercury is effective in controlling blood pressure,reducing stress and improve sexual drive.so it is prohibited for a widdow.

  • Married women wear toe ring

Toe ring is worn by married women generally in the 2nd toe.
It is made up of silver as silver is a good conductor of energy.
There is a nerve situated in the 2nd toe which goes to the uterus and then passed to the heart.
Wearing a toe ring makes uterus healthy and menstruation regularised.

  • Ear piercing

Ear piercing improves intellect, decision power and power of thinking.

  • Applying henna in wedding

Wedding is a very stressful phase for female and male both so in Hinduism there is tradition to apply henna in hand which gives calming effect and reduces stress.

  • Wearing Bangles

Women wear bangles in their wrist which improves blood circulation due to continuous friction.moreover it prevent loss of energy due to the round shape of the bangle as it has no end.

  • Keeping shikha (choti) on the male head

There is a master sensitive spot on the head and shikha is believed to protect that spot and conserve the energy.

  • Bell in the temple

It is believed that the sound of the bell is pleasent to the god.
The bell is made in such a way that the sound of it creates unity between the right and left parts of the brain.
Moreover the sound of the bell gives echo effect for about 7 seconds which helps activating all our 7 healing centres of the body.

  • Worship the idol

Hinduism is famous for it's tradition to worship the idol.
Main reason of it is that if we see something, it becomes easier to concentrate so an idol is placed which helps improving our concentration.

  • Worship the peepal tree

In Hinduism peepal tree is worshipped though it doesn't give any fruit.
Peepal tree is the only tree which give oxygen even in the night.

  • Worship Tulsi plant

Tulsi plant has many health benefits.
It has great antibiotic and antioxidant properties so Tulsi plant is believed to be in place of the god in Hinduism.

  • Touching feet

In Hinduism, we touch feet of elders in which we bow down and touch the feet of the person by our hands keeping our ego aside.
Touching the feet gives positive thoughts in the mind of the elder person and as we are touching the feet by our hands it completes the energy circuit and gives positive energy to us.
The elder person keeps his palm on our head which give positive energy through the palm also.

  • Fasting

By doing fast, we give rest to our digestive system and give time to the body for detoxification.

  • Sitting on the floor while eating

We sit in sukhasan position (cross legged) while eating which gives instant calming effect and signals the brain to prepare the stomach for digestion.

  • Why not to sleep keeping the head towards north??

Human body has it's own magnetic field and the earth is gient magnet.when we sleep keeping our head towards north, our body's magnetic field becomes assymetrical with the Earth's magnetic field which causes problems related to blood pressure.

  • Throwing coins into a river

In ancient times, the coins were made up of copper and copper is very good for human body.
Throwing coins into a river and drinking that water gives benefits of the copper to the body.

These are only few of the rituals.
Hindu tradition is rich with science based knowledge and it's acceptance in routine life.
