Bored? Help find Gravitational Lenses By Looking Through Images of Distant Galaxies!

in #science7 years ago (edited)

The Space Warps Project is a fun way to kill some time and help out scientists. Here is how they explain their project:

"Gravitational lenses are massive astronomical objects – such as galaxies – that lie in the direction of other distant and faint galaxies. Gravitational Lenses are very rare astronomical objects (one in a million). We need your help finding them! The massive foreground objects, such as galaxies or a group of galaxies, focus light from distant objects towards us. They act like huge, natural magnifying glasses allowing us to see further into the Universe."

They are looking to get help with 1,000,000 classifications this week! I've done 44 so far this morning. How many can you do?!

This project is hosted by Zooniverse which has lots of other interesting citizen science projects. I've done thousands of classifications of old ship logs, underwater photos, images of asteroids, particle accelerator data, old science journals, and more!
