What causes these growths on trees?
I believe this is a Pin Oak. You see trees with growths or knots growing on them quite often. Do broken branches cause this?
Also, is this a Pin Oak? This tree was found in Western, Maryland.

Yes. Broken branches and possibly subsequent infection. If these growths continue to expand, you may be looking at Agrobacterium tumefaciens infection (crown gall disease).
Atum infects by entry through wounds. Fascinating pathogen causing tumours on plants.

I never knew trees could get infections. It makes sense that they could knowing that they can get 'sick' from certain species of burrowing insects.
trees can get sick from many pathogens from nearly all branches on the tree of life. check out my posts to learn more about diseases on crops. most of it applies to trees as well. Trees also form beneficial associations with microbes. Mushrooms are a good example (though many eat from dead matter.)
