A study published in the journal Nature indicates that four astronauts who participated in a space flight with SpaceX experienced changes in their genetic profiles, changes that were related to biological processes associated with aging, which led researchers to conclude that, at the molecular level, the astronauts had rejuvenated.

Obviously we are not talking about a regression of chronological age, the astronauts did not become physically younger, but alterations were observed in certain genes related to aging, specifically the size of the telomeres of the cells of these astronauts that grew during a three-day space trip.

Telomeres are like the protective tips of chromosomes, which are the genetic structures of DNA. These telomeres shorten a little each time our cells divide until they disappear and the cell dies, which is why this shortening is considered an indicator of cellular aging, that is, as we age, our telomeres become shorter.

Los telómeros son como las puntas protectoras de los cromosomas, que son las estructuras genéticas del ADN. Estos telómeros se acortan un poco cada vez que nuestras células se dividen hasta que desaparecen y la célula se muere, por eso este acortamiento se considera un indicador del envejecimiento celular es decir, a medida que envejecemos, nuestros telómeros se vuelven más cortos.

The fact that astronauts' telomeres have lengthened after their space travel suggests that, at least at a cellular level, they have undergone a rejuvenation process, which could indicate that the space environment has activated biological mechanisms that counteract the shortening of telomeres and, therefore, cellular aging.

Although this study is very interesting, it is important to remember that this is a first step and further research is still needed to confirm these results and better understand the underlying mechanisms. In addition, we have to keep in mind that space travel carries many health risks that are not exactly rejuvenating.
