The beginning of the evolutionary discovery in Africa.

In 1911 Professor Wilhelm Kattwinkel, on a medical expedition in the then German East Africa explored the slopes of a ravine in the middle of nowhere.

He collected some ancient fossils and took them back on his return to Germany.

They belonged to a three-toed horse.

The excitement at this discovery led to a dedicated expedition being organised by the Universities of Berlin and Munich, with the Kaisers support, specifically to this tear in the earth on the fringes of the Serengeti plains west of Ngorongoro crater.

Hans Reck was to lead the expedition which found it difficult to find the gorge recorded by Prof. Kattwinkel as Oldoway.

After 3 days searching in the target area they discovered where they had set up camp was in fact the place they were looking for.

Reck proceeded to perform a complete geological survey of the area in the following three months and collected over 1700 fossils.

Nearing the end of the expedition a human skeleton was unearthed surrounded by Pleistocene animal bones. If it was the same age as the animals that surrounded it then it was the oldest human remains yet to be found.
Reck proclaimed to the world that "Oldoway man" had been found.
