The MP3 format is officially dead
Truly the end of an era. The German agency that invented the MP3 audio format and licenses some patents for it, Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, has officially terminated it's licensing program. (https://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/en/ff/amm/prod/audiocodec/audiocodecs/mp3.html)
The MP3 was more than a format. It was a cultural moment, the greatest demonstration of the power of the internet thus far, and a strong prophecy about the coming disruption in the global media industry. As a middle class kid growing up in India, getting access to broadband internet and MP3s was a definitive moment - my entire worldview exploded and was quickly reformed - much larger, weirder and more accepting of diversity of all kinds. I used to listen to everything - German Techno, 90s Hip Hop, UK Bhangra, Latin Pop, whatever one could find.
The MP3 is dead. Long live the MP3. What are you favorite MP3 memories?
I had all Michael Jackson songs in mp3 , don't knw how I lost em all.I'm still pained.
I made mp3s out of music CDs back in the days.
Yes I still feel guilty for having them sold.
