RE: How English was Made: One Language’s Long Journey from Humble to Honorificabilitudinitatibus
Interesting stuff. I just finished a year long french course in Quebec, Canada. I'd have to say, living up here has given a greater respect for the English language. It takes the best words from all other languages and doesn't seem to care like you said. French, that is, Quebec French, will fight to the death to keep English words out of their language. There are teams of government people that are hired to make English words into french words. If something doesn't sound french enough, it needs a new, French sounding word. There are language laws that prevent English from being displayed bigger than french. I'm probably not even allowed to have a "welcome" mat on my front door. It would have to be a "bienvenue" mat.
