The First Immortal

in #scifi7 years ago

“So you just found him… It… orbiting a star?”
“Thats right, Admiral. Our scanners picked up an anti-matter energy signature as soon as we entered the system. We ion pulsed but couldn’t get visuals, so I sent an exploratory vessel that discovered it. I damn near didn’t believe it myself,” Doctor Archibald whiffed, excited about the possibilities.
“...And he’s alive,” Vice Admiral Browning stated without betraying his confusion at the ordeal.
“He’s stable.” Archibald conjected, for lack of a better term, “Our basic diagnostics reveal he is emitting negative energy, while also not absorbing it. As if it is being funneled into something else.”
“How could it possibly be negative? It defies all logic,” the Admiral was dumbfounded. He wasn’t a scientist but he knew that over thousands of years of scientific theory and borderlands testing - where it could be recovered - the only thing that had ever produced negative jules was anti-matter.
“It is very strange. If he were truly a being of anti-matter, he wouldn’t be stable!” Archibald quipped on his previous lack of understanding, “Admiral… I truly believe we might have discovered the first naturally occurring quantum lifeform!”
Browning sat in thought for a moment, “Put this… thing… through every test possible, I want a full report immediately.”
“Yes, sir, I will have a report with the evaluation ready as soon as possible.”
“Good. Now, I need to get back to my office and write up my own report, the council will want to learn about this as soon as possible.”
“Yes, good day, Admiral,” Archibald said as he bowed.
Admiral Browning entered the lift and left the research wing. Archibald was excited to see exactly what secrets this ‘quantum-being’ might hold. Archibald hoped that the thing would stay asleep long enough for him to get the data he needed. Considering that this thing was sleeping through freezing-hot space, he didn’t think that a couple pokes and prods would bother it at all.
