Mission Accomplished! Server upgraded!

in #scotbot6 years ago

You'll be happy to know that the server has transitioned over smoothly. We're on the new scotbot instance. It's faster, and has more room to grow. Give the site a refresh. Things should go a little faster now.

Nice it was pretty sluggish before but already noticing a major improvement. Question how will server costs be covered ?

The new server costs about $50 / month...I think we'll manage :-)

lol not bad at all, some times they can be rather expensive.

is steem-engine.com server SERIOUSLY $50 a month? Anyway we can have some sort of public backup, i mean if its that cheap why not run 10? To make sure it never has any down time? People just want some sort of hint of decentralization for steem-engine... wow $50 a month seems sooooo cheap... all possible BECAUSE its centralized right?

Well there's a few different pieces here. This post is talking about the SCOTbot server specifically which is currently a centralized and proprietary software that uses the Steem Engine platform.

The Steem Engine platform is technically as decentralized as anything else - the code is open source and available for anyone to run and independently verify the state of the system. That can also be run on similarly priced servers. I should also note that a Steem consensus node also only requires about a $50 - $100 / month server so Steem Engine is pretty much in line with that.

Centralization vs decentralization doesn't typically affect server costs...an abnormally high server cost most often just means that the software was not designed to scale. Now that the MIRA project has been finished, among other things, the costs of running a Steem full node have also dropped to much more reasonable levels.

For that matter, what will it take to stay cash flow positive? Steemit issues naturally come to mind
