The purpose for gun control and the regulation of firearms and ammo by government entities is to reduce and limit the formidable fighting potential of an organized uprising against the government. The US Constitution was written in hopes of giving governing authority to the people of the nation and not aristocratic nobles, many checks and balances were implemented into Constitution to ensure that individuals and government branches do not gain overwhelming control of the nation. The second amendment was put into place to ensure the citizens of the nation had the means to fight an oppressive government should one arise that no longer had the people's best interests in mind and upheld to the statutes set forth in Constitution.

It's not even like the citizens would really have a chance: the citizens have semi auto guns... the government has semi auto guns, full automatic machine guns, tanks, helicopters, jets, artillery, aircraft carriers, warships, destroyers, bombs, missiles, chemical weapons, and nukes that they can all use against their most hate and most threatening enemies when they can't deceive or persuade them. With the destructive arsonal our government controls there is really no need for them to fear an uprising, unless trust in the system itself were to collapse. As the truth about government offices reveals blackmail, espionage, human trafficking, pedophilia, terrorism, embezzlement gross misuse of funds, and misuse of rank or authority. The corruption is not limited to a single individual, but a network establish by by means of blackmail if need be. The corrupt group which controls our government is not made up of familiar faces, but rich and influential people, technical, economic or political.

If you do just a little bit of research you will find that in the several instances where governments disarmed civilians, governments subsequently murdered hundreds of its own citizens for disagreeing with established government regulations or rule. Germany, Turkey, China and other nations have historical records for mass imprisonment and murder of civilians to accomplish a political or military agenda.
