Why VPNs that store timestamps with user IP addresses should be avoided

A recent case has brought to light the privacy dangers of VPNs that store connection logs alongside a subscriber's real IP address.

VPNs are used by people all over the world to conceal their true location and encrypt their data.

This is done to stop Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and governments from being able to tell what they are doing online.

This privacy is important to people living in draconian political regimes. For those people, a VPN can allow them to overcome local censorship to view material that is considered politically dissenting. This lets them escape the bubble of propaganda to get unbiased news.

Accessing that material can be dangerous for people living in those locations because the political regime could come down hard on them: sometimes even putting their life at risk.

When a VPN keeps connection time logs WITH the subscribers IP address, it is possible for intelligence agencies and governments to use time correlation attacks to ascertain that a person visited a website.

This makes any VPN that keeps these types of logs insecure in terms of privacy.

This is particularly problematic when the VPN isn't even informing its users that it is keeping these types of logs (as is the case with PureVPN).
