Selflessness
Twelve Step Programs underscore the importance of helping others and placing less emphasis on personal gain. The literature consistently emphasizes that true value lies in giving, rather than in keeping it for oneself.
Various religions and cultures emphasize the value of altruism. For example, the Bible states, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). Similarly, in Islam, the verse 13 of Sahih al-Bukhari reads, "Your brother is not just your Muslim brother but a non-believer because you should wish good things for them as well..." This principle is integral to Islamic etiquette and ethics, promoting the treatment of all individuals with kindness and compassion.
From a personal perspective, I once lived by selfish and self-centered principles for many years. It was only when I came to understand that life is fundamentally about helping others that I began to question my own priorities. Initially, I was resistant, asking, "What about me?" However, I eventually realized that life seems to fall into place when one prioritizes the well-being of others. My home remains in order as long as I keep this focus.
I encourage everyone to find at least two to three ways to help someone today. Set aside your own needs for the benefit of others. At the end of the day, reflect on how much better you feel about yourself.
Peace & love to all
