Steemit SEO Casestudy Part 2 - Fishing For Backlinks
What if you could build an account on Steemit.com that would rank for any keywords in your chosen niche? This is precisely what I am trying to accomplish via a project account called @ucluelet.
In this article, I am going to share with you EXACTLY what I am doing to build the page authority of that page day after day.
But first, let me define some terms:
Backlinks:
an incoming hyperlink from one web page to another website.
Basically, whenever another website is pointing to your chosen domain or article, you have a "backlink". Now, back in the old day, you could have any type of backlinks and it didn't matter. Now, you need backlinks that are relevant and contextual to the niche you are looking to cover.
Page Authority:
Page Authority (PA) is a score developed by Moz that predicts how well a specific page will rank on search engine result pages (SERP). Page Authority scores range from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.
The goal of this case study to bring the account @ucluelet from a Page Authority of ZERO to a Page Authority of 100 (if that's possible).
Report Card
Even though I added a few backlinks yesterday, it didn't show up on MOZ index yet. From what I understood, the index is updated only a few times a year. So we will have to be patient on that.
What I Did
- In the "Website" section of @cryptoctopus account, I've inserted steemit.com/@ucluelet (Do Follow Link)
- Created a Scoop.it Account to curate Ucluelet related content
- Opened an account on http://community.magicseaweed.com/ (Contextual DoFollow Link About Surfing)
- Wrote a new article about Ucluelet
- Submitted https://steemit.com/@ucluelet to Bing and Google
- Open a Gravatar Profile: https://en.gravatar.com/tourismucluelet (NoFollow)
- Open an About.me account: https://about.me/ucluelet/ (DoFollow)
- Open an About.me Account for my steemit blog: https://about.me/uclueletblogger/ (DoFollow)
- Open a listography account: https://listography.com/ucluelet (DoFollow)
- Start a public board on Trello: https://trello.com/b/cbFUpjnZ/ucluelet-british-columbia (Crazy Awesome DoFollow)
New Discovery
Steemit doesn't give away free DoFollow Links!
If you want to know which links on a page are DoFollow and NoFollow, I suggest that you install a chrome extension called NoFollow. It will box the NoFollow links on a page in RED.
I discovered that Steemit.com has been smart and having all links to NoFollow until a user has reached a certain level of Reputation. I do not know exactly what the threshold score is but I think it is a good idea to prevent people who would use Steemit only for SEO purposes.
Conclusion
For the following days, I will be adding more and more backlinks. My next report will give a better idea of the first step of my strategy. Please let me know how I can improve the casestudy, my report or my methodology.
I checked Ahrefs on my links and they are all follow, so like you say it must be the reputation level.
Good article and experiment! Do share all the results!
Congrats. Looking forward to what will happen next.
Do you think a lot of other SEO services are starting to look at Steemit seriously?
To be honest, I have no idea.
exactly, one of the better ideas on steem. this is to prevent PR/Spammers from using steemit as a SEO Bitch.
The temptation is too big. Especially now that we are just about to breach the top 4000 websites on Alexa. We will soon surpass bitcointalk.org if we keep going at the pace that we are. I remember hubpages doing something similar like having at least 5 posts that were reviewed by the editor before giving you a DoFollow link.
This is great info @Cryptoctopus. I did not realize our accounts had to reach a certain threshold to get Do Follow links. I would also add a Twitter profile with the link, set up an RSS on Diigo, RSS to Google Plus using Buffer, RSS to Tumblr with a link back to your account on the profile (Use Sandy theme).
Set your Google Plus account up with all the links to your profiles under the about section. This will signal to Google that they are yours. About.Me and Gravatar are also important for this. You can Add Youtube as well.
Steemians are under utilizing the other Web 2.0 websites.
Yes for sure. I'm waiting for that fiverr gig to create all those social bookmark websites for me to then connect them to my Google Plus and about.me. They aren't the most amazing form of backlinks but they are better than nothing and still relatively safe. Onlywire takes care of autopublishing to all those platform so that's what I am going to use.
Great additional information to add to a good post. Thanks Randy
i can see i have a long way to go then. i joined steemit because it was meant to give better google ranking. but now i can see why its not working.
on Google.DE you're on page 10 now for ucluelet. Good starting point for measuring improvement ; )
I can only go up from there ;-)
hmm, honestly I have no idea on how this works
This is outstanding work! Very interested in updates on the project. SEO is a very powerful marketing tool. Followed you and upvoted as well.

Nice after a long time I saw an article about seo feeling happy I think you are the only one person posting about seo in steemit.
My pleasure. I can't wait to see the results on the long term.
Very interesting , thank you for sharing with us !!
hi, I learning steemit, please you can help me
please go to steemit.chat in the #help of #general channel for help.
This is awesome. Love the updates so far. I'm always interested in learning new things and have read up some on SEO, but really interested in seeing how this test case works out. Maybe I can come up with some ideas of my own for my local area.
It is pretty awesome. Believe me, if you are living in a somewhat touristy area...people would pay you to stay at their place and write a review. (if your blog is ranking higher than their business)
I'll have to check it out. I would be interested in how to sell this to said business. I live around Lake Michigan / Chicago area and think this definitely has some potential. Lots of touristy spots around the lake in Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin from what I've seen.
You can be paid to be a travel blogger. Basically, if you have the # (DA - PA) to back it up, manage to get a few testimonials, you can basically setup a email campaign to reach out to hotels and resorts.
Sounds awesome! I'll let you know when I get started and keep following your posts on how to make it happen!
Thanks for sharing useful post. share I will definitely be coming back here more often. on blog
