Spending time with a young and energetic American family from Chicago during their first trip to Africa was a great experience for me. Our Cape to Garden Route cycling itinerary was action packed and involved many different cultural and natural activities starting in Cape Town and ending 6 days later on the Garden route.

Sunset on Table Mountain
Each day was unique. We waited for the mystical “green flash” at sunset on top of Table Mountain with hundreds of other visitors in Cape Town for the World Cup soccer tournament. A visit to Masiphumelele on our AWOL Bicycle Township Tour with Zwai, our fantastic cultural township guide, was also thoroughly enjoyed by the family whose thirst for all experiences African was unquenchable. The braai under the starlit canopy of the klein Karoo followed by a morning cycle to a breakfast consisting of scrambled ostrich eggs and ostrich farm sausage. YUM!.
Cycling through the forests and alongside lakes in the Wildernis section of the “Garden route” National park. Tranquillity defined!
Visiting the “Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre” for an educational tour where we got so close we could hear the subjects purring contentedly during their “cat naps”. All of these experiences are just snippets from each day that will be remembered fondly but lets not forget that no cycling trip is complete without a flat tyre. Sometimes these too are greatly appreciated since one can then listen to the birds sing, catch their breath or have a snack while we fix the puncture!
When driving Carolyn, Nathan and Parker to the George airport for the next part of their holiday in Africa I asked ”Which day of our Cape to Garden Route cycling trip together have you enjoyed the most?” The answer was unanimous. Each day was enjoyed in equal measure! No favourites!
