The main entrance to the main Mitchell Reading Room, State Library of New South Wales.

My favourite photography is to capture shadows in architecture buildings. Shadows give depth, light and shades. It enriches meaningful structure of a building and accentuating architectural details. The photograph below strengthen the architectural composition and massing of Mitchell Library. The shadows enhance the sense of scale and volume of architectural space. We can see the beautiful architectural details of classical plinths and columns reinforced by strong shadows.

Built in 1826, the State Library of New South Wales is the oldest public library in Australia. The Main Reading Room, Mitchell Library is one of the most significant parts of the history of Sydney and Australia with important collection of Australian historical records and documents.

The library was designed by Cobden Parkes (Government Architect), construction dated 1934-42. The architectural style was Inter-War Academic Classical.

The Mitchell Library is well located on the corner of Macquarie Street and Shakespeare Place in Sydney, adjacent to the Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
