Whether or Not You Should Delete Your Facebook Page
Facebook has come under fire by many after the latest privacy scandal, but perhaps the most drastic course of action many have taken is to straight up delete their pages. And it’s not limited to individuals either! Brands are following suit, taking down their pages under the pressure to take a stand against Facebook’s lack of protection for consumer privacy.
The latest to do so is Elon Musk himself, deleting Tesla and SpaceX’s Facebook pages at the end of last week. So, it begs the question: should you delete your brand’s Facebook page?
Musk is Crazy
We love Elon Musk, and all of his crazy ideas. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to try selling flamethrowers! Similarly, we don’t plan on deleting our own Facebook Page or the pages of our clients.
Facebook still is the largest social media platform by a wide margin, and its ads still represent one of the best ways of reaching an audience. This makes it a must have for many businesses, especially those that are smaller or brick and mortar.
So, we’d advise you not to delete your Facebook page unless you’re really adamant on taking a stand.
But, Don’t be Afraid to Experiment
However, just because Facebook is the giant right now doesn’t mean it’ll be there forever. Scandals like this can really hurt the platform, and as all of you are aware, new, blockchain based alternatives are around now which are poised to change the social media landscape. In fact, we are seeing more and more brands experiment with Steem. We're here and Engadget and a few other brands are as well.
But at only 70,000 daily active users, its size (and thus reach) pales in comparison to Facebook. Which is why we're not deleting our Facebook just yet! If you take anything away from this scandal, it’s that you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. Branch out and put yourself on at least a couple different platforms that way you're protected in case one fails.
