What is steemit

I am a new user to steemit and this site seems like a very different experience to many of the other social medias I have been a part of. I was wondering what kind of social media does this site want to be? Right now it certainly doesn't seem like it would be a reddit killer because it seems much harder to cultivate subcommunities on this site. It also doesn't seem like you can add friends on this site so it seems like it would be harder to tag different stories to friends like you can do on Facebook. Right now it just seems like steemit is only hitting people familiar with the crypto market which is a very small minority of people. Maybe this isn't the right place to post this but I'm just kinda confused on how this site is supposed to run. I just signed up because I'm always willing to try out new things
