A better holiday
I'd like to take you with me on holiday.
We lived in Ladysmith, in the middle of KZN (KwaZulu-Natal) We decided to go to Cape Town for our holiday. 1,600 kilometres, in a car with three children, ages 16, 13, 6. So we hitched up the caravan and hit the road. We did the trip over two days, staying in a caravan park. The caravan park had a medium-sized swimming pool, guess where all the pent up energy went.
We had booked a two week stay in a caravan park in Somerset West and we drove in there the following day. That caravan park didn't have a pool, but a fantastic playland with swings etc we never saw our son, he spent as much time there as he could. We were on the sea front, and though we warned our son not to go there alone, the girls could go when they wanted to.
We had so much planned, visiting family, my brother and his family, they had just put down lawn on the back porch and we sat there for meals, it was great eating outside. Peter's aunt
Rita, we spent a couple of nights there, and had our first snoek (a fish only found at the Cape) barbecue, delicious. Aunt Rita had a beautiful voice. Peter's half sister, Paula, who looked surprisingly like Peter. I haven't mentioned the families, we were awash in cousins, boyfriends and friends.

During the week while all the folks were working we did the tourist thing, strange for Peter and I as we grew up there. We went for a drive all around the peninsula , the Indian and the Atlantic oceans meet there. We went up the cable car to the top of Table mountain, where the view was absolutely amazing. (there was a long queue there) There is a working mine
at Simonstown. They allow visitors, to go on escorted tours through the mine. Outside they have a concrete area about 3 car width with precious stones in it, you buy a packet and go and scratch in the Scratch Patch for the stones you want to put in it. We went walking in the Botanical gardens, that was the first time I walked through a 'smell' garden, for blind people to enjoy
We drove around to look at how the places we had lived in had changed. Everything looked smaller, although Peter's old house now had a second story. My old house looked in need of some tender loving care.
Most of our food was takeaways, with fish and chips being the favourite, but a lot of the time we were invited out to family meals.

We tried to get back to the caravan park fairly early, about 6, so that my son could play in the playland. The sun sets later in Cape Town and that gave him extra time to play.
Time went so fast, and so we had to come home. We said goodbye to all the people we had met. and loaded up, by this time we were looking forward to going home. We stopped at the same caravan park on our way back and enjoyed the pool.
It was a lovely holiday, and we were glad to get home.
