The highly-acclaimed series Battlestar Galactica gives you a great look at how this might work out (under an admittedly catastrophic, sci-fi premise). You even get a thorough look at political structure, mob mentality, elections and governance.

I highly recommend it (The modern one!).

I don't think I want to live it myself, at least, not as an early-adopter!
