in #spanish7 years ago (edited)

¡Hola amigos de Steemit!

Another basics blog today - the colours! Learn these and your friends will be verde with envy!

rojo - red

naranja - orange (the same word is used for the fruit!)

azul (marino) - (navy) blue

amarillo - yellow

rosa - pink

morado - purple

violeta - violet

gris - grey

marrón, castaño - brown

café - dark brown

negro - black

blanco - white

plata - silver

dorado - golden

El pastel es rosa. - The cake is pink.

Tengo dos vestidos rojos. - I have two red dresses.

Dark and light

To say "light [colour]", use colour + claro (remember: most adjectives come after the noun). For example: verde + claro = verde claro = light green.

To say "dark [colour]", use colour + oscuro. For example: rojo + oscuro = rojo oscuro = dark red.

Endings

Just like most other adjectives, the colours change form depending on whether the noun is masculine, feminine, singular or plural. However, we'll look at this in greater detail in a later episode (I'll leave a link here after it's posted). For now, I suggest you concentrate on learning the masculine, singular forms, which are listed above.

I know a lot of you will already have studied the colours, but hopefully this has refreshed your memory and maybe even added a few new words to your vocabulary. We've got another episode of Extra Spanish coming up, so if anyone has any topics unrelated to grammar that they'd like to read about, please go ahead and comment them below :)
