A Wise General Keeps His Own Counsel

If there is one thing that anyone can be certain of when they try to do something that most people would perceive as making a big change or divergence from what most of society sees as the “rational” or “safe” move, its that you will be met with at least a small dosing of resistance; likely much more than that.

Friends and family that we expect to be fully supportive suddenly seem much more questioning and hesitant.

And that’s just the people that we are personally close to, never mind the endless scourge of trolling from people from a distance. In this online digital meta-culture this is pronounced.

Often times it is much better to make “moves” behind closed doors or with a tight counsel, only to reveal what has been in the works for the world to see when it is already completed; the job is done.

The problem lies again often times with the naysayers that plague society in various forms. Many people are fearful of the unknown and this is to be expected with the way much of society functions. Schools, media and other immensely influential (and manipulative) companies and groups tend to keep people walking a narrow line in life.

People are taught often times to be very protective of people that they are close knit with and wary of what are seen as outsiders. Planning to take a trip down to Mexico? You can bet if you tell the world your plans a decent portion are going to insist that you recant immediately, after all...it is far too dangerous over there, why not stay here, where it is so much safer and familiar? Don’t take a risk, and you can hardly have any trouble befall you.

Same with starting a business. Since 95% of businesses do in fact fail, you will be reminded of that statistic regularly by people that genuinely are concerned and are acting not out of spite but worry disguised as love.

Even though...as the saying goes, if you love something let it go. Most people don’t see it that way.

I know that when I decided to get into sales of different sorts, I heard rumors about how I didn’t have “what it take to be a salesman”. I heartily proved them wrong over the next decade, but all the same, that wasn’t supposed to be the plan because I was “supposed” to follow my schooling path, like 99% of people tend to do, and get a corporate job in the healthcare industry.

Upon closer investigation, the mere thought of this avenue brought vomit up into my mouth.

So I decided to get into fitness and sales, but I didn’t tell anyone about it until I had started the job. As they say I threw the hat over the wall and was forced to cover the obstacles to get it back. Burn the ships as the story of Cortez goes (apparently in 1518 upon arrival of the New World with 600 men Cortez ordered the ships burned, ensuring that there was no going back).

The moral of the whole story is that I have never chosen to follow the path most travelled, and I’ve found myself in some thick brush all scratched up many times. But the adventure is real. I came across a lot of information that many people will never find, sacred books and knowledge and such in my spare time. I’ve met people with amazing stories of bucking the norm, especially in my journey to business and personal growth seminars. Personal growth has become much of a buzzword these days, as working on ones self regardless of what society thinks about it can be quite lonely at times. But being alone and improving is much better mentally and intellectually and even spiritually down the line than being surrounded by people that all harbor secret fantasies and regrets of adventures not taken.

And when you work on yourself in private and don’t tell the whole world about it you create a mental fortress where the things that many people obsess over and cause untold spiritual misery and depression and all the things that go along with these spiritual illness, only to return stronger and to create something that can help people around the world?

They don’t see the grind just the glory, and that is unfortunately how it is.
