The race nobody wanted to win - Monaco Grand Prix 1982
The 1982 season was full of memorable races. Monaco Grand Prix was one of them despite lack of spectacular overtakes and wheel to wheel battle. However, last 3 laps were probably the most ludicrous ones in history of motorsport.
10 laps before the finish it started to rain. Keke Rosberg of Williams crashed and ended the race, his teammate Derek Daly also hit the barrier but managed to drive further without front or rear wing. On the lead Alain Prost tried to get away from Riccardo Patrese and finish before rain got more intense; on lap 74 he spun into the barrier, heading lead to Patrese, which spun and stalled his engine half a lap later (at Loews, slowest corner in F1 calendar).
Didier Pironi of Ferrari took the lead, but on the last lap his Ferrari ran out of fuel in the tunnel. Andrea de Cesaris's Alfa Romeo chasing Pironi simultaneously ran out of fuel. Derek Daly had a chance to win that race, but his damaged gearbox seized up before he started last lap. Marshals pushed Patrese's car, which allowed him to restart the engine and reach the finish. When he crossed the line he wasn't even aware of the fact he won the race...
