Sport is such a unifier
All over the world there is so much mistrust and conflict, yet on the sports field people can put all of that aside. Not that countries do not try and politicize sport. But often it is sports people uniting that starts the path to healing or reconciliation.
Nelson Mandela knew this when he came out of jail where he spent the best part of his life, when he reached out to his former oppressors by donning the springbok jersey at the Rugby World cup in 1995.
In his words from a speech in 2006 "Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair."
Powerful words from an amazing person. true sport is such a unifier i have seen groups in conflict come together to compete with one another and nation play sport and for that moment when they are playing all is forgoten even for a moment to watch the game

I'm a football coach and it's such a joy to watch kids make unbreakable bonds between each other, both on and off the pitch.

Sports can be a unifier, however these days sports is being used more and more as a political tool. It's absolutely disgusting. Sports should be by the people for the people, not used to discriminate or exclude certain nations.

Really great article! That's why I was always trying to be competitive in sports - it's such an amazing thing. I still can't forget my childhood when we all used to gather and play football on the field, make teams, make rankings, groups, tournaments etc - it was all so fun...
