Wrestling Perspective: My thoughts on that women's MITB match
Over the past few months I've noticed a shift in WWE, once unbeatable RAW has become predictable and monotonous. Smackdown on the other hand have been given a bit more creative control with characters and development. It made sense to give the women in blue the MITB match although one could argue the red brand needed it more, and while I wasn't a huge fan of some of the women participating , I was looking forward to what I thought was going to be an amazing match, with that briefcase grabbing glory moment at the end.
There was that moment of course, no other way for the match to end, but rather than Charlotte, Natalya, Becky, Carmella or Tamina getting that moment of glory and their name in the history books; we had James Ellsworth climb the ladder and toss the briefcase to Carmella. So technically, Carmella wins (thanks no dq) but that money shot of the winner atop the ladder as the first ever winner of the women's MITB, that perfect moment for this groundbreaking match, goes to a dude.
Now I know, it builds heat for future storylines but for me, it's just not a good enough reason for the ending of that match to pan out the way it did. Hell, Ellsworth could have hoisted Carmella up to grab the belt herself and I wouldn't even be here writing this. I'd be a bit annoyed as she wasn't my first pick but that's something you can get over. This will be in the books for years to come. This was the first ever (I don't think I've mentioned yet) women's Money In The Bank, so why did they let a man 'win' it?
Does Vince McMahon still believe women aren't as good as men at professionally entertaining people with wrestling skill and ability? Or is the auld bugger simply getting his jollies pissing us off?
All eyes will be on the blue brand on Tuesday night to see what the returning Daniel Bryan has to say about all this but for me, the damage is done.
You can't take this back, you can't change it.
The first ever winner of the first ever women's Money In The Bank was James Ellsworth.
That is a great point - the first ever women's MITB grab from the ladder was by James freaking Ellesworth. Just wow - at least you know this guy is building up legitimate heat!
Maybe not the right kind of heat though ;)
Nah I'm all for storyline building but something like this seemed a bit too important. Oh well, I'm sure Vince has a plan!
Yeah it's disappointing that WWE wrecked the symbolism of the first women's MITB, but at least the women's division is going in the right direction overall. Women wrestlers have much more opportunity than when I was growing up in the attitude era!
Interesting perspective and i always find it amazing how many fans wwe still has despite everybody knowing that it's scripted.
Even some in my family will hog the tv to watch wrestling when it's on. Boggles the mind.
Thank you. It's a bone of contention for some fans actually, movies, tv shows, etc are all scripted and enjoyed but with wrestling it's always questioned. It's always entertained me in a way tv soaps, for example, don't so I stick with it (even if it disappoints me at times).

WWE is targeting a "mainstream" audience with both shows, meaning it's main stories are going to be more "drama" storyline based rather than "competition" storyline based.
If you watched Smackdown today we have a MITB ladder match next week on Smackdown, the idea behind James Ellsworth pulling down the briefcase is to get eyeballs on the women's division and build some drama around the match.
I think they succeeded in building hype for the match next week on smackdown, however they could have been more creative and build up the match for the PPV iteself.
WWE always has retarded booking after Wrestlemania.
