Superbowl LII Commentary

So, this post is a little later than I wanted, but I had to wait on my account creation!

Admittedly, I’m not a huge football fan, but I do enjoy watching the occasional NFL game, and for the first time, I am a proud owner of seasons tickets to my Ottawa RedBlacks for the 2018 CFL season. I do however, really like the Superbowl. I don’t need a pot of chilli, 4 dozen chicken wings and two pitchers of beer, but I do love the hype. For those of you know have read my material, you’ll know that I’m not always a fan of a specific event, but rather the “background” of what’s going on during the event and the experience as one takes it in. The Superbowl is no different for me, although this year’s game was outstanding on the field too!!!

The hype around Superbowl is mind blowing for me. A one-country, one-sport, athletic event that generates such excitement, dedication and pure emotion is truly impressive and I’m sure is respected whether you’re a football fan or not. Everything about this game is immense. The Superbowl ring, last I checked, was the second (or third) most recognized ring in the world (according to “them”, as in the Royal ‘They’)!! The advertising is ridiculous at over $5 MILLION DOLLARS for a 30 second spot! Leading into the game and festivities themselves, I have known many people throughout my life who are just excited to see the anthem singer(s) and/or the half time show; the rest of the game may as well not even happen…..and let me tell ya, that last thirty minutes of a game (better known as the final 2:00 minutes) kills them!!! I love it! But really, the half-time show is pretty cool and has been for many many years. JT was back in the fold this year and all I could think about was the wardrobe malfunction he “caused” back in 2004 for Superbowl XXXVIII (can’t they just use 38??). Poor Janet, she looked so (not) distressed. LOL Anyway, JT was good but he blew through his endless repertoire so quickly, you had only enough time to identify the song, tell your game-time chum, ”oh I like this one” and it was over. I waited patiently for another celebrity to join him and surprise everyone, but that never happened. Basically, I think his audio/visual was decent, entertaining and dancing, superb (as that’s what he does best), but originality low creating an ok but pretty uneventful and basic performance. (Queue the JT fan’s hatred towards me here).

Now, the game! This year was special….why? NOT because the Patriots were in the Superbowl, that’s old news and in my opinion, getting boring. It’s kinda like watching Crosby hoist the Stanley Cup again….BORING!!! But what was special, is that the Eagles came into the season expected to be mediocre at best, came out HUGE all year featuring their BACK-UP Quarterback, Nick Foles in the Superbowl! This is somewhere that many football fans, including realistic Eagles fans, didn’t expect them to be, let alone win it for their first title EVER! The game was spectacular with a ton of scoring with some crazy catches on both teams (mostly Phili) and no sloppy play found anywhere. I’ll caveat that last statement, with one exception, and it’s more of a head scratcher, but both teams forgot how to kick the damn ball in the first quarter….nerves maybe?? Regardless, this game will go down in history as one of the most entertaining Superbowls ever.

I just wanted to give a shout out to random Eagles fan/tattoo guy. I saw a pic of this guy online getting a Eagles tattoo saying “Superbowl Champs, 2018, 2019, 2020”….I guess he looks less like an idiot now….at least for 9 months or so. Cheers and thanks for reading.
