NBA Playoffs format change

For this year only (so far) the NBA has adjusted the playoff format for the first round. Not sure that I’m sold on it.

The top 6 seeds in each division are safe from the play-in games. Teams 7-10 are not as lucky but for the first time seeds 9 or 10 have a chance at making the playoffs.

Essentially, the 7 and 8 seeds play a game and the 9 and 10 seeds play a game. The winner of the 7 and 8 game is the #7 seed. In the 9 and 10 game, the winner is alive but the loser is eliminated. So the loser of the 7-8 game and the winner of 9-10 play for the 8th and final spot.
