Success and tech startups

Success, they say, is like being pregnant. Everybody congratulates you but nobody really knows how many times you were screwed to get there.

And the same goes for tech start-ups. We just look at the app in the store or the slick website and then we start to criticise from the sidelines. Maybe you don't like pink. (Which would be a REAL problem if you plan to ride the Giro d'Italia, bit moving on) or you like or don't like a certain font. Maybe you don't have your reading glasses with you and in a nanosecond you click and move on.

But have you thought about the eye-watering amount of work and sweat and money that went into that app or website? About the dream it represents, or the years it took to come to fruition?

Every start up symbolises gallons of coffee and probably an equal amount of sweat and tears. Late nights, fights with lovers and partners because you had to cancel at the last moment. And if you are lucky enough to be in Africa, then you could probably throw in a few beers after the brainstorming in the sunshine.

SportsPodium wants to salute every other single team of start up companies. Teams who laugh loud and panic together. Who share in this whole indescribable unit called a project. Throughout the hardship, the joy, the fun, the games, the hoorah and who stick together to give birth to their baby.

As the success comes in, the thought and memories of the struggles vanish. And my advice is to take a breathe. Absorb your success. Enjoy the journey. And don't ever take things for granted or get greedy.

Enjoy your success as well as your achievements, however insignificant they may look to others. It's your road, not theirs. And your hard work and sweat and late nights that brought you success. Nobody who ever reached the peak of the mountain did so by accidentally falling there. Success is a bucket load of hard work. And worth every moment of it.
