New Orleans 23 - MINNESOTA 16
Offense vs. defense? Drew Brees led the NFL with 5208 YP last season. And now the Saints have picked up Adrian Peterson (10 years a Viking) to alternate with Mark Ingram (1043 YR LY), with plans for Peterson to help protect leads in the late going. There are easier defenses than Mike Zimmer’s rock-ribbed Vikes’ against whom to test this theory. So the going will not be easy. But the N.O. defense had some good additions and played with improved resolve in the preseason after finishing 31st in points allowed in 2018. Rookie RB Dalvin Cook adding some speed to the Minny offense, but key WR Stefon Diggs was haunted by drops in exhibition play. Brees’ boys 8-1 as an underdog in 2016!
DENVER 20 - L.A. Chargers 19
Debut of two long-term assistants as head coaches in the rowdy AFC West—former NFL RB Anthony Lynn for the Chargers, and former NFL DB Vance Joseph for the Broncos. And first game for the renewed Los Angeles Chargers. One thing Lynn has done is to greatly protect his starters in the preseason after early injuries have helped wreck the San Diego outfit the L2Ys. So Philip Rivers starts the season with a healthy group, including key WR Keenan Allen, who had 67 recs. in just half a season in 2015. Meanwhile, quick DE Joey Bosa and top cover corner Jason Verrett are key performers in d.c. Gus Bradley’s revived Charger defense, while former San Diego HC Mike McCoy is the o.c. of the Broncs!
