Messi, who led Barcelona to the La Liga title and reached the Copa America semi-finals, won the FIFA World Player of the Year award.
It is the sixth time that Messi has won the Golden Ball, beating his rival and traditional rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who was crowned five times.

"I certainly thank my team-mates who helped me win the award," Messi said after winning the award.
Abizaid and: "10 years ago I got my first gold ball here in Paris, and I came with my three brothers, and today I get the sixth ball, at a very special moment in my personal life."
