The Argentine has been named as the club's new captain as the post - Iniesta era kicks in.

Messi isn't new to captain armbands as he's been wearing it for a while albeit for his country. He is taking over from Iniesta who has moved to Vissel Kobe to continue his career out of Spain.

Messi will lead his teammates on the field this season as he's been moved up from vice captain to captain.

Messi has been playing in Barcelona since he was a kid and has gone on to win lots of trophies with the club including five Balon D'Ors.

Messi was captain of the Argentine side that got knocked out of the world cup in the last sixteen. That looks to be behind now as he looks set to lead his team to another LA Liga title and possibly, the Champions league.

Ter Stegen is now in consideration for vice captaincy.
