Parental negligence is like a destructive force eating down or families in these modern days. It destroys our homes, destabilizes and also endangers the health and life of a child. During this period the child is so much exposed to all sort of danger within its environment.

I heard a story of a child that was always left in the care of their neighbor during holidays. The boy will always come back to the house moody when the parents are backee. So on a very faithful day, the boy came back crying and later confessed that their neighbor always force him to have oral sex with her. She was later arrested and the encounter was really true.

Moreover, negligent can come in various ways like;

  • Leaving a child when he or she needs protection and affection.
  • Failure to provide food, clothing or medical attention
    Placing the child in dangerous or harmful circumstances.

However, parental negligence is when a parent including step-parents, adoptive parents or someone who plays a parental role fails to take necessary to the proper raising of child.

It is also the absence of parental care or the persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical or psychological needs that are necessary for mental, physical and emotional development of a child.

Emphatically, parental negligence is when parents could not show love, care,play, interact or pay attention to their child all in the name busy schedule.

Statistically, seven out of ten children suffer this parental negligence. The children are left at the mercy of house help or neighbors. They are on their own because their parents are not available for them to interact and share their experience they had during the day.
When this happens, it affects the child physically, emotionally and especially academically.

When a child is being left out in family discussions and contributions of idea, that is, if the child suffers parental negligence, its implications include:

  • Poor academic achievement
  • Depression
  • Personality disorder
  • Poor retentive memory
  • Low self esteem

There is no level of private teaching arranged for a such child that will make him/her improve academically because the basic thing needed is not available.

So am of the opinion that first thing first, parents should make out time for their child; love, care, give attention and interact with them to know their strong and weakness and also bring out the best I them and earn their trust, boldness, good character and lovely mood.
