  • 17th April, 1620 Marguerite Bourgeoys, French founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame and the first Canadian saint, born in Troyes, France.
  • April 17, 1676, Frederik I, van Hessen Kassel, King of Sweden (1720-51), born in Kassel, Germany.
  • On 17 April, 1820 Alexander Cartwright, American sportsman recognized as inventor of modern baseball, born in New York City, New York.
  • On April 17, 1837, J. P. Morgan, Sr. [John Pierpont], American financier and philanthropist General Electric, Steel Corporation, AT&T, born in Hartford, Connecticut.

  • April 17, 1923 Harry Reasoner, American newscaster (60 Minutes, ABC, CBS), born in Dakota City, Iowa.

SIGNIFICANT SCIENTIFIC EVENTS IN HISTORY ON APRIL 17:

  • April 17, 1970, The Apollo 13 mission ended safely with a splashdown into the Pacific Ocean, four days after the spacecraft aborted its mission while it was on the way to the moon, after a tank containing liquid oxygen burst.

  • April 17, 1967, the spacecraft Surveyor 3 was successfully launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida, making it the second US spacecraft to make a soft landing on the moon, where it studied the lunar surface and sent more than 6300 pictures back to Earth.

  • On April 17, 1964, Geraldine (“Jerrie”) Mock landed in Columbus, Ohio, becoming the first woman to complete a solo airplane flight around the world.

  • On this date in 1930, the discovery of a new rubber-like compound was recorded by Dr. Arnold M. Collins in his laboratory notebook. And after weeks of research and experiments it became the first synthetic rubber.

April 17, 1861, the first oil well fire occurred at the Little and Merrick well at Oil Creek, near Rouseville, Pennsylvania. It ignited shortly after gushing, burned for three days, and 19 deaths were recorded.

  • April 17th, 1810, the first U.S. patent for pineapple cheese was issued to L.M. Norton of Troy, Pennsylvania.

What a day April 17 have been in the science and technology hub, hopefully more historic scientific feats would be attributed to this day in the future.

  • April 17, 1524, Giovanni Verrazano, a Florentine navigator, discovers New York Bay.

  • April 17, 1534, Sir Thomas More is confined in Tower of London.

  • On April 17, 1808 Bayonne Decree by Napoleon I of France orders seizure of US ships.

  • On this day in 1865, Mary Surratt is arrested as a conspirator in Lincoln's assassination.

  • April17, 1900, 7 high chiefs of American Samoa sign Instrument of Cession

  • On this day in 1932, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia ends slavery.

  • And on same date in 1945 Benito Mussolini flees from Salò to Milan
  • April 17, 1948 Elpidio Quirino assumes the Presidency of the Philippines, taking his oath of office two days after the death of President Manuel Roxas.

  • April 17, 1969 Sirhan Sirhan is convicted of assassinating US Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

  • On the same day, April 17, 1982 Proclamation of the Constitution Act by Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

  • On this day in 2009, former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark becomes the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the first woman to lead the organization

  • On this day in 2014, Gabriel García Márquez, Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist who won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, dies of pneumonia at 87
