STATUS -An Introduction to Status IM

Status is the first mobile Ethereum client, which is solely built on p-2-p technology. Status IM is a fast media messenger that comprises of both group and public chats and it also serves as a cryptocurrency wallet that is capable of sending, storing and receiving ETH and ERC20 tokens and other variety of ERC721 collectable tokens. Status is also considered a portal to the decentralized web that offers access to a wide range of decentralized Dapps. Status has integrated their native token, the SNT (Status network token).

BUILT on the Ethereum Blockchain

Status IM is a strong supporter of a fairer society, a system that does not discriminate but works for many and not just for few within society. Status strongly backs up the idea of user's superiority; they believe that all users should be allowed to be control of their own information (data) and identity as well, instead of having traditional centralized companies take charge. This is one of the core features of the Ethereum blockchain, it allows smart contracts to be written, deployed and executed within the Ethereum blockchain. Let's simply say that all these are the attributes of a decentralized network which has been tested and trusted to be true, therefore, getting rid of relying having to rely on a centralized entity.

Status aims to serve as a gateway for individuals to freely get into the Ethereum community by offering an easy to use interface in the nature of a Mobile Decentralized App that can be downloaded on existing mobile and also desktop platforms.

The end goal of Status is to become a completely Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to be operated entirely by its community.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Status IM was founded and created by Jarrad, but Carl wrote and produced the White Paper, the platform held an ICO in June 2017. The ICO recorded a huge success as it succeeded in congesting the Ethereum network for a brief period and they were able to raise over $100M in the first 24 hours.

More recently Status has increased from a handful of users to 70 employees functioning across the globe this has led to the expansion of their organization. Status IM usually sponsor and attend events like global hackathons and have recently hosted their own hackathon in Prague. It was in one of these recent events The Devcon 4 team made a decision to completely turn off their Slack and switched to using Status Beta fully as the major source of their main communications. This Status Dapp has been very beneficial to users within the community as users can note a significant increase in the aspect of communication within the Dapper. I should point out that before the team released the Beta, there was a thorough security audit undertaken by Deja Vu, more details can be found Here.

Although Status IM is still in its Beta stage, the platform has recorded great improvements recently in every aspect of the Status Dapp. There are updates every two weeks, and the team releases the latest upgrades through TestFlight both for iOS and the PlayStore for Android. It’s very important to maintain a good level of focus on the entire ecosystem because the market might be going down but the technology still remains strong. I believe that we are living through one of the most advanced technical eras, which is why some persons are subtracting surplus value from others by using empowering endeavours to grace any a minority, while they can reach and impact the majority for the better. It is important that individuals are oriented so that they can carry this amazing opportunity of decentralisation and help less fortunate and create a better world for everyone.

HOW TO GET STARTED

The Status application is available in both desktop and mobile devices. It supports iOS, Windows, Linux and Android systems. I will be showing you how to get started on Android OS.

Click on Install and in few minutes time, the app will be downloaded and installed on your mobile device.

When you open the app you will be directed a welcome screen as shown below. Then you can go on to set up your new account.

In setting up an account you are required to put your desired password. This process requires you to use at least 6 characters.

After creating and confirming your password. You can then go on to create a display name for your account. After which, you click on Get started to continue setting up your account.

Welcome to Status! Below is the screenshot of the homepage. Notice that there are four icons at the bottom Chats, DApps, Profile, and Wallet.

The signup process is very easy and smooth, in my next article we shall be exploring the App. but it looks promising for a new DApp.
