Biafran troops destroy sections of yhe Niger River Bridge during the 1967-1970 Civil War

Across the entire Nigerian Federation, there are very few structures (man made or natural) with more connotations for national unity as literally as the steel truss bridge across the Niger River which links Onitsha, through commercial capital ogle Anambra state, to Asaba, the administrative capital of Delta state.

Also known popularly as the Onitsha Bridge, through Niger River Bridge is a direct connection between the south-eastern heartlands, and the south-western region.

The bridge project was initiated by the colonial administration before independence, but its construction was completed in 1965 at an estimated total cost of 5 million pounds.

  • As the Nigeria Civil War raged on, Biafran troops, forced deeper into yjr southeast by advancing federal troops, came to a decision ogre strategic value as far as the war was concerned, but also far reaching political implications: to blow up through two old bridge.

  • But the significance of the bridge, coupled with the collapse of alternative means of transportation such as #rail, soon began to tell on the ageing structure

On the 6th of October 1967, the Onitsha end of the mile-long bridge was blown up, and the Republic of Biafran achieved a major milestone in cutting off ties with three Nigerian Federation. After the colonel Ojikwu left Biafran secession was quashed in 1970, three federal government reconstructed the damaged portions of the bridge, ajd once again, it was opened for public use.

Reprieve finally arrived in 2014, as then President Goodluck Jonathan flagged off the construction of a 2nd Nigeria bridge, complete with the associated access roads, to link Onitsha answer Asaba in Anambra Abdul Delta State. The new bridge which will be 159om in length is located 1.7km downstream of the existing one.
