Gaming the system by bots is basically impossible to prevent, because captchas can't be implemented on a self-contained blockchain, or it would be ridiculously difficult. A reverse auction to 30 minutes after a post is made for curation rewards was introduced to give non-bots a chance to curate before bots voted, because an account, including bots, voting instantly for a post would sacrifice all of their curation rewards to the post's author.
As for your first post, you simply posted a link to the article. If you had even said "I wrote this" it might have been voted on more. Otherwise, aesthetics tend to matter on Steemit, as posts are shown with a thumbnail image of the first image used. This is the post that was more successful, it looks a lot nicer and includes some paragraphs for people to get a taste of the story. https://steemit.com/ethereum/@truthtaco/ethereum-reaches-unanimous-agreement-to-hardfork I'd say it included a paragraph too many but it was a pretty well formatted post, not just a title with the headline and a link. As a writer for a website, I'd like to hear what you think of this style of article previewing and linking.

Great article, thank you. I like the perspective of thinking in terms of intrinsic motivations. For many, I think, the money part gets them initially interested, but having also been here almost a week now, I've also been really impressed with the community and the lack of trolls (so far). Even if a share only gets $0.01, as you mentioned, that's more than years of posting on Twitter or Facebook, right?
The nice thing about open source is that many people do it just because. As some people will write bots to game the system, others will write down vote bots to protect it. Additionally, those who are vested in the system for at least 104 weeks are going to defend it, even if that means gather consensus to make any important changes that are needed.
I came here from the original article. It is good to have a contrarian voice here. The bot question is one that must be solved. The non-contributing leeches (bots?) should be shunned. I think this platform has a lot of promise. The financial aspect will get people to leave traditional social media platforms and come here and in the long run get more people into cryptocurrency and of course Bitcoin since it is the main crypto.
