Steemit deserves to earn some revenue for running the web site and API and everything else they do.

I agree with this, but I'm not a fan of using beneficiaries as the way to do it. I'd be much more comfortable with something like a proposal that distributes a reasonable amount of DAO funds. Witnesses get rewarded for providing the block processing infrastructure, it seems reasonable to me that providing website frontend and API infrastructure should be rewarded as well. But it makes more sense to me to have that happen at a broader level rather than as something that's in people's faces with each and every post.

In general, I would agree, but there's a little bit of appearance of conflict if Steemit votes for such a proposal, and I guess it probably couldn't pass the return proposal without their vote.

Steampeak funded some of their operations with beneficiary settings while they were here, but I'd be fine with SPS funding, too. Some increased transparency might be called for if it went through the DAO.
