Steem Is Now Officially "The blockchain for Smart Media Tokens and decentralized applications"

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

No, STMs are not yet live, but a subtle change in the way Steem is publicly presented hints at an imminent launch.

While doing my mandatory weekend browsing in the repositories under the steem umbrella, the description below just stood out.

I don't know when this was changed, I just saw it now.

Given the fact that the SMT technology wasn't yet launched - albeit the development has been very fast paced and thorough, as far as I can tell by watching the Github activity - this is quite a bold statement.

Strategically, it aims to position Steem as a core technology, and not just as a social media blockchain.

And that's a completely different game, putting Steem in the same territory with players like Ethereum or EOS.

Later edit: by looking at the Wayback Machine, I pinpointed the change sometimes between November 7th and November 22nd last year. Before that, the Steemit tagline used to be: "A social media platform where everyone gets paid to post. https://steemit.com"

If you're new to Steemit, you may find these articles relevant (that's also part of my witness activity to support new members of the platform):

Sort:

Everybody has its own understanding of this technology. And his own expectations.

So, dear steemit'ian, you already know what those three letters mean

SMT ???

OK, thats good. And now think for a minute - how many people on this planet knows this?
0.1% ?
or 0.003%?
How do you feel being among the TOP 0.003% of man kind?

Are you ready for the STORM ?

Steem > eos > ethereum.

We look at it as friendly competition but different value propositions. EOS is more of a direct competitor to Ethereum. Both of them are trying to build a general application development platform that enables developers to build any kind of decentralized application they can imagine. We're developing tools that entrepreneurs and developers can integrate into their platforms right now to gain all of the benefits of blockchain and cryptocurrency technology without requiring all of the engineering expertise of building them yourself. Plenty of room in the space for everyone!

Community Liaison, Steemit

Thank you for clarifying this. Exciting times ahead!

I am not sure I would go that far but STEEM is ultra promising.

EOS >>> Steem > ethereum

Interesting. Re-branding by stealth. Or perhaps this signals a change in the mindset of the developers.

2018 - the BIG year for Steemit is already kicking off ;-)

Well I think it's more of them continuing to separate Steem from Steemit. They already gave Steemit it's own unique logo separate from Steem. The repository shown in the post is the Steem one, not the one for the Steemit site so it makes sense that the description would be changed to not be about Steemit.

Yeah that makes sense ;-)

players like Ethereum or EOS
Ethereum has crypto kitties...
what has EOS got?.

A lot of money into it, for starters.

how many coins did you say were scams the other day? percentage? a LOT of money?

EOS has already $6 billion market cap and it was barely started, there were two releases - ahead of time - of the blockchain. Still time to grow, but it will need at least a major implementation / success story.

but so far it hasn't DONE anything.
is that right?

If its cool for me to jump in: EOS is in the fundraising and development stage. The reason people are so optimistic rests in large part on Dan Larimer, CEO, who also founded and developed the first versions of BitShares and Steem.

I don't think they have any active use cases yet, but given Dan's last two projects (two of the most widely used in blockchain) - seems reasonable to give it some credit for now.

My heart went up reading your headline and then crashed into my stomach as I got into the article. LOL

Damn tease.

Nice catch! :) By the way, if you are interested I just put out a comprehensive introduction to SMTs: https://steemit.com/smt/@trogdor/smart-media-tokens-for-dummies

Cheers,
Trogdor

Read it and left a comment. Welcome back posting :)

Great piece of information and cool to know about this very topic. Keep updating and yes you're doing really an awesome job to make steemians aware of every innovation occurring on steemit @dragosroua

Stay Blessed, Steem On!

oh it's on now, this is gonna be a super super interesting few years for EOS, STEEM and ETHER ;)

I am not sure it is a competition...but STEEM is going to great heights.

I can assure you of that.

It's great to see Steem being more than just a social media blockchain. I'm excited to see developments in the future.

STEEM is also a decentralized exchange...something that most people overlook.

We are seeing a world that moves away from centralization.

All tokens created using the SMT protocol are going to be paired with STEEM and, I presume, traded on the internal exchange on this blockchain.

It is a self contained, open source unit.

"All tokens created using the SMT protocol are going to be paired with STEEM"- So, any other cryptos that comes up the idea of SMT now, must pair to be traded with STEEM. Did I understand the way you are trying to put @taskmaster4450? Or, is it still a different thing?

You are understanding it correctly.

Any token created under the SMT program, they are paired with STEEM so they have liquidity.

And since there is a decentralized exchange on this blockchain, it is one area where they will be traded.

Thank you for this information @taskmaster4450

That's actually a good point @taskmaster4450, I keep on forgetting that even though I just picked up quite a bit of Steem from internal market for the past several months.

YEs let the SMT show begin... we gonne eat all the cryptokitties out there ;-)

Ha ha, I was thinking almost the same thing :)

Actually, arent the SMTs going to CREATE cryptocurrencies, not eat them?

😁

no the cryptodoggies eat them
