Steem.Supply Stats: Top 10 Countries And Top 10 Cities

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

It's been a while since I didn't write about steem.supply stats, as I've been busy improving the app, but today seems like a good day for that, so here we go.

Top 10 Countries

United States still leads the way, comfortably, I'd say. There are only 2 countries from Europe in it, United Kingdom and Germany (quite surprised about Germany, to be honest). One very big presence is Venezuela (given the economical condition of the country, that's not surprising at all) and the rest are coming from Africa / Asia.

Top 10 Cities

Before diving in the city chart, let's have a look at a wider city distribution map:

Seems like the city distribution is more even in Europe, although there aren't many countries in top 10, while the highest urban concentration of users seems to come from Africa, then Asia and South America (with Venezuela being the most visible) coming second.

I'm surprised to see so few Canadians around here and almost nobody from Russia / China (although, probably, Chinese traffic is most likely rerouted by VPNs, to circumvent the Big Wall).

Now, let's look at the city chart:

The first city is Lagos, Nigeria, followed by Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Never seen Medan near top 10, so its presence on the second position is a very strong sign of deep adoption in that area. The only European city is Vienna (surprising since Austria didn't make it to top 10). Philippines has two three cities in Top 10, Quezon City, Makati and Cebu.

All in all, seems like people most interested in their economic side of blogging on Steemit are still coming from Asia, with very strong presence in Venezuela and Nigeria.

I'm a serial entrepreneur, blogger and ultrarunner. You can find me mainly on my blog at Dragos Roua where I write about productivity, business, relationships and running. Here on Steemit you may stay updated by following me @dragosroua.

Wanna know when you're getting paid?

I know the feeling. That's why I created steem.supply, an easy to use and accurate tool for calculating your Steemit rewards

It's free to use, but if you think this is a useful addition, I'd appreciate your witness vote.

Thank you!

Psst: new to Steemit? Start Here

Sort:

very surprising ...not included name of big countries like india and china..

Interesting...
I wonder how many people we are steemit users at Barcelona...
Maybe we could create a sort of steemit community here with monthly social events or so...

Those are really good numbers, i guess you can now start monetizing it now!

On top 10 cities there 3 cities from the Philippines. these are Quezon City, Makati, Cebu .

Ups, thanks for the clarification, I stand corrected :)

no worries sir..

So are you making these statistics using the visitors IP, or how do you determine their location?

Good question. Maybe from the profile data, but most users do not share the location in their profile. @dragosroua, how do you evaluate the location?

What do you think about the rather large proportion of third-world countries in the set, if you have any specific opinion to begin with?

First, I don't think there are third-world countries anymore. We grew up with this notion which now is obsolete, IMHO. These are countries with a faster growth rate, actually, because they start from a lower level. And yes, their dominance seems both

  • predictable: these people are less interested in ego validation - hence not using Facebook, Twitter, etc - and more in satisfying immediate needs
  • in line with @dan philosophical principles about UBI. I don't know if you read any of @dan's articles on these topic, they are really fascinating.

Can you link some of those? The last I've read from him was his criticism on Cardano.

What can you say about Romania? How many users are there?

Not that many, under 1,000 active and maybe 2-3,000 in total, by my estimations. But these just guesses, didn't look in the stats.

I understand. I'm looking for active Romanian users, but they are very hard to find especially because many of them write in English or other languages and they are not in Romania. It would be very useful if you can help me with any data in this direction, if it's possible, of course.

Have you tried to touch base with @sorin.cristescu?

I talked with him a few days ago, but not about this. I'll talk to him again, especially if you say he could help me. Thanks for the suggestion!

You may run a Facebook Boosted Post over Romania attempting to hit Steemit.com users over there. Facebook costs are about 2 Steem per 5,000 impressions, roughly.

This seems a better way to bring new users than to find the old ones. Anyway, thank you for the idea.

Blast resteems, then. There are several providers. OR Market a post via Upvote Bidding Bots OR Promotion Tab. Otherwise is like hunting golden gooses

Today we will publish a contest for the SteemRomania community logo. I think is a good promo for our community.

Same for Hungarian users, though I could find some of them.

It would be hard for me to imagine a day on Steemit without Steem supply open on a second monitor, so thanks again for this.

It's interesting to see that it's so heavily adopted in SE Asia and Nigeria. Certainly fits with a lot of the posts I see on here. I feel bad for the more genuine writers from those areas (because I've met a few) who have to overcome the stigma of all the spam coming from their countries in order to be a success.

It's quite surprising to see countries like Venezuela and Philippines rank higher than UK and also seeing so few European countries in the top 10. I would have guessed that most of the users would have come from richer countries due to computers and smartphones being an expense that would rank lower in priorities than food for example.

Developing nation is increasing

Steem and SBD has a huge impact on Venezuelans. Would you believe a monthly pension is just 0.400 Steem. A competitive salary for a young Chemical Engineer, just graduated, runs at 2.5 Steem!!! Things down there are just crazy under the highest hyperinflation of the World.

A competitive salary for a young Chemical Engineer, just graduated, runs at 2.5 Steem

Is that an hourly rate? That would be around $8.75. That doesn't seem like that low given the salaries in my country. Either it's daily - which would be very bad or the inflation is truly insane. I will have to look into it later.

Sure is a surprise to not see Russia in that top 10 list. Probably because they have their own version of steem and steemit called golos. I guess your calculations only work for steem and sbd
